FAQ - 💬

❓ How long can iris tubers be out of the ground?

👉 It will not damage the prepared rhizomes to remain out of the ground for two weeks. Select a planting location with good drainage that receives a minimum of 5 to 6 hours of sun every day or that is in full sun. Iris may be planted in a bed or as clumps between other plants.

❓ How do you keep iris from flopping over?

👉 Use bamboo stakes to help keep your dahlias and iris upright. Carefully place the stake next to the plant making sure to avoid the underground tuberous roots and rhizomes. Loosely tie the plant to the stake using twine. Make a figure eight looping the twine around the stake and the other loop around the plant stem.

❓ Should you cut the seed pods off iris?

👉 Snip Iris seed pods off of the plant in late summer, being careful to not lose any of the seeds as you do so. Store the pods in a cool, dark place until you are ready to use them. If you do not want to replant your iris seeds, these pods can be disposed of in your compost or waste bins.

❓ Do iris need to be cut back?

👉 Since the eggs overwinter on the foliage, it's critical that you cut back irises in the fall. Trim off the leaves all the way back to the rhizomes, and toss them in the trash or bury them. If you come across a soft, rotten rhizome, dig it out and throw it away.

❓ Why are my iris bulbs coming out of the ground?

👉 Bulbs and Soil Conditions One reason you may see bulbs coming out of the ground is improper site condition. Soil for bulbs needs to be rich and organic, well worked, and free draining. Bulbs will rot in boggy soil, and they have difficulty growing up through hard pan or heavy clay.

❓ Can you let iris bulbs dry out?

👉 Placing them in the sun allows them to be dried without excessive damage, as is the case with artificial heating. If it isn't sunny on the days that you're storing them, then you should place them near a window and continue drying them for about three to four days.

❓ How do you support iris?

👉 Keep rhizomes exposed. Unlike bulbs, which thrive deep underground, bearded iris rhizomes need a bit of sun and air to dry them out. If they're covered with soil or crowded by other plants, they'll rot. Taller irises may need staking or they will fall over.

❓ What are the big pods on my irises?

👉 If the flowers have been pollinated, they will produce seed pods. The pods start out small and green but expand quickly during summer months. When the pods are dry and brown, they split open and the seeds are probably ripe.

❓ What should I do with iris seed pods?

👉 Let the seedpods ripen and turn fully brown and begin to split open before you cut them off and store them in a cool, dry place. In the fall, as it begins to cool, plant the seeds in the garden in an area prepared with amended soil and that is weed free.

❓ Should irises be deadheaded?

👉 You will want only to remove flowers that have begun to fade or wither. Not all irises will produce multiple blooms, but bearded Iris varieties and reblooming irises can benefit from deadheading. The process will encourage further blooming throughout the season and make the plant look more attractive.

❓ Can you leave iris bulbs in the ground over winter?

👉 Because they're prone to dehydration and can withstand freezing temperatures, they're usually left in the ground for overwintering instead of being lifted.
